October-Respect Life Month

October 5th addendum:  I wanted to share the below updates with you as opposed to waiting for next month's blog.
  • The 72 hour waiting period was upheld by Judge Farrell on Oct 3---a significant victory!
  • Also, below are photos from Life Chain that was held on Oct 1 and additional Pro Life prayer opportunities.
Life Blessings,

Iowa Rules 72-hour Waiting Period Legal

Iowa received a big win today with the ruling of Judge Farrell stating the 72-hour waiting period is legal. Earlier this year Planned Parenthood and the ACLU challenged a 72-hour waiting period which passed into law along with the 20-week abortion ban and a requirement to offer women a visual of her ultrasound. Planned Parenthood was able to postpone the 72-hour waiting period from going into effect by calling the law unconstitutional. They stated it caused an "undue burden" on the mother and was not medically necessary.
Polk County Judge, however, has ruled the law constitutional. The Des Moines Register reported today Iowa Judge Jeffrey Farrell refused to block the law. “The undue burden standard has been criticized, but it fairly balances the two competing interests of a woman’s right to choose an abortion versus the public’s interest in potential life,” he wrote. “The evidence at trial focused on the hardships women face when dealing with an unwanted pregnancy, but the public’s interest in potential life is an interest that cannot be denied under the law. Both of these interests are important.”
The 20-week abortion ban which states an abortion cannot be performed on a child after 20-weeks, also includes a requirement for women to have two doctor visits before getting an abortion, an option for the mother to view her ultrasound and the 72-hour waiting period. There is an exception to this law if the mother's life is at risk.
This law takes not only the mother into consideration, but also the life of the child who must also be considered.

Life Chain 2017 Follow-Up:
Life Chain was incredibly successful this year. Everything went smoothly with St Theresa being the sign pick up/drop off location again---we had over 230 people attend! We welcomed people from Walnut Creek Church, who bolstered our numbers so that we filled Merle Hay in front of St Theresa and stretched over to University along St Theresa west parking lot.  We are particularly thankful to see so many young people and families participate.  A group of young women sang beautiful hymns through much of the time that made this a very uplifting setting for all.

St Theresa Pro Life committee members brought cookies to feed this large number after Life Chain was over. The larger the number of people, the more impact Life Chain has.  We pray that God had the right people drive by at the right time for encouragement, and we know that everyone's prayers were effective :)

Singing angels kept our spirits high!

We also heard from Charlotte Pettit, who attended Life Chain.  She shared with us that a group of Pro Life people meet every Saturday morning in front of Planned Parenthood, 1000 E Army Post Road, at 10am.  They pray all four mysterious of the rosary.  Also the 1st Saturday of the month is when the students in high school come to do their commitment. All are encouraged to come and pray for Pro Life intentions.

Super Bowl and Pro-Life Champ Matt Birk
Standing Ground: NFL Pro Says YES to Life!
Our 2017 Annual Fundraising Banquet promises to be a fun, football-themed evening with a profound pro-life message from a Catholic man who puts faith and family before fortune and fame. When the Ravens won the Super Bowl in 2013, our Keynote Speaker Matt Birk, boldly declined to visit the White House based on his pro-life beliefs. Invite family and friends to hear this NFL champion as he encourages us to stand our ground as champions for life.

Labor Day--The dignity of human labor

"The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in Gods creation." USCCB
"Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." Mt 11:28

Below are the pro-life updates for this month.
Labor Day Blessings!

Please join fellow St. Theresa parishioners for the 28th annual Life Chain! It will take place on Sunday, October 1st from 2:00-3:30 pm at St. Theresa's Church along Merle Hay Road. We stand in solidarity for all the lives that God has created and quietly pray for an end to abortion and for help for vulnerable mothers and babies. Service hours are available for students who attend.

Life Chain will take place rain or shine. Stand with us as we give glory to God and thank Him for both the born and the preborn! If you have any questions, e-mail Rachel Egan at See you there!

“Standing Ground: NFL Pro Says Yes to Life!”

This year's Keynote Speaker Matt Birk  is a Super Bowl champion and courageous pro-life leader! A Harvard graduate in economics, he was voted among the top ten smartest student athletes in America. Birk has stood his ground publicly for his strong pro-life/pro-marriage views.

After the Ravens’ 2013 Super Bowl win, he declined to meet then-President Barack Obama with his teammates because the President had proclaimed, “God Bless Planned Parenthood” in a speech. Birk stated, ”It was because of my Catholic faith and my pro-life convictions, but ultimately, it was because of my kids.”

Incredible pre-dinner offer for students who have a paid ticket
to the dinner:
Catch a pass, toss the ball and learn about football and faith with our champ! IFL will escort the students to and from the playing area
at the hotel: 4:45 pm-5:15 pm.

We welcome individuals, couples and especially, we ask that you might serve as a table sponsor (seats total of 8 guests), bringing family, friends, students and the clergy to celebrate Iowa’s pro-life wins this year and to learn more about the mission of IFL!

We are waiting for a Polk County District Court's decision in a lawsuit against the three-day waiting period in Iowa's new 20-week abortion ban. The court case was brought by Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. The prohibition on abortion after 20 weeks remains in place while the waiting period before an abortion has been held up by the Iowa Supreme Court.
