He was named the 2011 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for his off-the-field service, as well as his playing excellence. After a 15 year career in the NFL and a Super Bowl XLVII win with the Baltimore Ravens, the six-time Pro Bowl Center retired from playing football and accepted a position with the National Football League as their Director of Football Development.
When the Ravens won the Super Bowl in 2013, he declined to meet President Barack Obama with his teammates due to a comment the President made in a speech in which he said, "God Bless Planned Parenthood." Birk stated, ‘It was because of my Catholic faith and my pro-life convictions, but ultimately, it was because of my kids.’ Matt and wife Adrianna are raising seven children, all under the age of 14.”

Des Moines “Birth Mother Connect” Support Group
To provide birth mothers a place to find support, Beauty Amidst the Ashes is beginning a Birth Mother Support Group for mothers who have made an adoption plan for their child. Birth mothers will connect and be empowered to share their stories. They would like to ask your assistance to let women know about this group. The group meets monthly on the first Tuesday of each month from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at the Smokey Row Coffee Shop Conference Room (1910 Cottage Grove Avenue, Des Moines).
In addition to these monthly group meetings, there will be a closed Facebook group to reach women that are not able to attend a local meeting. The online group will offer a place where women can view a monthly presentation by our facilitator, Brigett De Vos, and participate in discussions. Together these women can find strength, friendship and encouragement. For more information, contact Brigett at brigett@beautyamidsttheashes.

Thank you for all of your help on action alerts lately! As legislative sessions come to an end, there has been a lot of progress made! States all over the country, including our own, are making pro-life breakthroughs.
Iowa Passes Law Banning Abortion at 20 Weeks!
From Iowa Right to Life: Recently, the 20-week abortion ban passed the Iowa Senate. Governor Branstad is expected to sign it into law very soon!
“This legislation bans abortions once a baby is at 20 weeks in the womb. It also establishes a three-day waiting period for women seeking an abortion. Thankfully, ‘exceptions’ for babies conceived in rape or incest or with fetal anomalies are not included in this legislation.
A three-day waiting period was included. This means that a woman seeking an abortion will need to return three days later to proceed with her irreversible decision. This will be among the strictest laws in the nation. Iowa would become the sixth state to require a three-day waiting period for women seeking abortions, joining Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Utah.
While the bill does not contain criminal penalties, it does allow a woman to pursue a civil case against providers who perform illegal abortions. Doctors can be disciplined by the Iowa Board of Medicine if they violate the law.”
According to Jenifer Bowen, “We are in the most Pro-Life legislative session in Iowa State Capitol history since long before Roe v. Wade in 1973!”
Gorsuch Becomes New Supreme Court Justice!
According to Lifenews, “Judge Neil Gorsuch became Justice Neil Gorsuch (recently) as he was sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice following a Senate confirmation vote.” After so much drama, it was a relief to hear. Thank you for all you did, writing your legislators and signing petitions to support now-Justice Gorsuch.

President Trump Overturns Rule Forcing States to Fund Planned Parenthood
President Trump has done some valuable, pro-life work so far in his presidency. Recently, President Trump signed a bill that overturned a late-term rule created by President Obama that forced states to fund Planned Parenthood.
According to Marjorie Dannenfelser, SBA List President, the new bill “ensures that states are not forced to fund an abortion business with taxpayer dollars. Rather, states have the option to spend Title X money on comprehensive health care clinics that better serve women and girls.”

Pro-Life Pope Francis“If we want to celebrate Christmas authentically, we need to contemplate this sign: the fragile simplicity of a small newborn, the meekness of where he lies, the tender affection of the swaddling clothes. God is there.
