Merry Christmas!

Dear friends, I hope that you are having a wonderful Advent and that you and your families are preparing to celebrate Jesus’ birthday!

Here is the update for January and February with many exciting pro-life events going on in the Des Moines area. Make sure you notice that the annual Midwest March for Life has been canceled, but will be replaced with a new event in March (see details below). I hope that you and your families can attend some of these events and share the information with others!

Also, remember for any last-minute Christmas shopping you need to do that you can be making a pro-life difference with no extra cost to you. If you buy on Amazon, use Amazon Smile for your purchases and designate Iowans
for LIFE Educational Fund, Iowa Right to Life, InnerVisions HealthCare, or another local pro-life charity as your giving option. Your item’s price doesn’t change, but 0.5% of your purchase goes to the charity of your choice. Every little bit helps!

God bless you and your efforts to love life from conception to natural death! Thank you for all you do, and Merry Christmas!

Midwest March for Life Rescheduled – March 30th

As of today, Iowa Right to Life has decided to cancel the Midwest March for Life to focus on preparing for the new legislative session which begins in January, but “it will be replaced with a vigil in the Capitol Rotunda on March 30, 2017. The goal is to have 4,000 participants represent the lives lost to abortion in Iowa in 2015.”

Because the Senate can no longer block pro-life legislative measures as easily, there is a good chance that some could be passed. It will help to show the legislators that pro-life issues are important to many voters. So save the date for this opportunity. More information will be coming soon!

Des Moines “Birth Mother Connect” Support Group

From Beauty Amidst the Ashes:  “For many women, the choice to place their unborn child for adoption is an excruciatingly painful one. Committed to giving their child the gift of life and struggling with the loss can be overwhelming. Dealing with this inner battle often times leads to feelings of guilt, shame, and regret.

To provide birth mothers a place to find support, Beauty Amidst the Ashes is beginning a Birth Mother Support Group. The circle of support group offers opportunities for birth mothers to build connections and provide a path for healing. This will be accomplished by meeting other birth mothers and empowering women to share their stories.” For more information, contact Brigett De Vos at brigett@beautyamidsttheashes.com.

 Election Results

With big wins at the federal and state levels of government, we need to continue to fast and pray for true pro-life improvements! According to Iowa Right to Life: “From the White House to the Iowa Statehouse, life was protected in [November’s] historic elections!” 65 out of 87 of the pro-life candidates were elected who had made Iowa Right to Life’s preferred candidate list. We also look forward to a pro-life judge being chosen for the Supreme Court.

Celebrate Life Holiday-Style

So it may seem a bit early, but my kids have already asked repeatedly how long it is until Christmas and they are super-excited that it’s only two months away! So, in addition to sharing local pro-life events coming up in the next couple months, I’m going to share some ways that you can celebrate life as part of your holidays. Advent and Christmas are a time of giving, so hopefully one of these ways will resonate with you and fit into your holiday plans!

In this event update for November and December, I hope that you find some pro-life events that you can take part in and get some ideas for loving on vulnerable moms and babies in honor of Christmas!

https://unbornwordoftheday.com

Advent/Christmas Ideas

Pro-Life Service:

- Go to the wish list for Ruth Harbor or one of the local crisis pregnancy clinics. Drop off some little things for them to support them in their mission and encourage them!

- Do you know a mom who has chosen life for her baby or a single parent with young kids? Send her a Christmas card and giftcard, offer to babysit for her, or have her and her kids over for a meal. Tell her she is doing a great job and become part of her support network!

- Donate gently used kids clothing to InnerVisions HealthCare – they now have a partnership with Once Upon a Child where they can turn in clothes and get giftcards for the value of the clothes. These giftcards can then be given to the pregnant moms and they can pick out all kinds of baby things they need.

- Give donations to or volunteer at crisis pregnancy clinics or pro-life organizations like Iowans for LIFE and Iowa Right to Life.

- Pray and offer up your hard things for vulnerable pregnant women and their unborn babies. Ask God to help you find hurting people to support. Pray for an end to abortion.

Pro-Life Gifts:

- Buy tickets for yourself and family or friends to attend the Dinner & Broadway Revue in December at Holy Trinity. It’s the gift that gives twice – your guests have a fun time with you, and all proceeds go to support the work of Iowans for LIFE.

- Buy all of your normal Christmas gifts on Amazon Smile and choose a pro-life nonprofit organization that will be supported with part of the cost of your purchases. Local pro-life organizations like Iowans for LIFE, Iowa Right to Life, and InnerVisions HealthCare are options you can choose. It’s a win-win!

- Pro-life movies – Movies are a powerful way to express the pro-life message. There are many that have excellent gift potential for people of all ages.

Click HERE to see a Huffington Post list of family-friendly movies that positively portray adoption. I am excited to share many of these with my children.

Click HERE to see a list provided by Students for Life of America of recent movies with pro-life themes. Many of these are for more mature audiences.

Giving a pro-life movie at Christmas (or watching it during the holiday family time) is an easy way to make people think about pro-life issues in a new way.

- Pro-life books – There are several lists online of pro-life books that every pro-life advocate should read. HERE is a link to one of the lists of top pro-life books. Check them out – the authors have made some of them available online for free. This can be a gift to yourself or others.

- Pro-Life T-shirts – Giving positive, pro-life t-shirts to other pro-life people is a great way to give a practical gift that will plant seeds in the hearts of the culture. HERE is a link to the Rock for Life online store, which has several good t-shirts. My favorite is the “I Love Babies” shirt. There is also a myriad of other pro-life jewelry, pictures, etc. that you can find online. So as you start to make your Christmas shopping list, remember that pro-life options are available too!

Election - November 8th
Please pray for the U.S. election that will happen on Tuesday, November 8th! With the Supreme Court hanging in the balance, as well as the lives of many unborn babies, the effects of this election will be huge. To be honest, while the choices aren’t exciting, the choice is very clear-cut from a pro-life perspective. Please pray and fast for the result of this election!

The Iowa Bishops have put out resources to help Catholics discern which candidates to vote for as part of Faithful Citizenship. One resource is a flyer which has questions to ask each candidate about their priorities. I was pleased to see that the first question was: “Do you support protecting human life from conception until natural death as a foundational principle?” That’s always a good start. To see the flyer, click HERE.

Midwest March for Life - January 14th

Save the date for the 5th Annual Midwest March for Life! The Midwest March for Life will be held at the Capitol Building in Des Moines on Saturday, January 14th. This is the opportunity for those of us who can’t attend the March for Life in Washington D.C. or the West Coast March for Life to be a voice for the voiceless and show our support.

The march is usually in the late morning and involves prayer and a short walk around the Capitol Building. There is also a Mass for Life and indoor educational opportunities for the rest of the day. You can see the short promotional video HERE.

So save the date! More details will be coming soon!

 Adoption Opportunity

During college I met a wonderful young lady who worked at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Ames. Her name is Misty and she is very sweet! After I left college, she got married and she and her husband were able to adopt a son. They are hoping to adopt again, and if you have one minute it would be great of you to like their Facebook page where they put up information about their family for birth mothers considering adoption to see.

Because God uses these little things at the perfect time, I hope that someone may see this and know of someone considering adoption. Please like their Facebook page HERE or send their information on to any prospective birth mothers you have met. Thank you!

Action Alert: Petition to Stop American Medical Association Support of Assisted Suicide

According to CitizenGo:

“The American Medical Association (AMA) has long held that assisted suicide is incompatible with the role of the doctor. However, the AMA is reconsidering that position. In several weeks, on November 13 and 14 in Orlando during an interim meeting, a special session will be devoted to discussing assisted suicide. As the largest association of doctors in the country, the AMA has a huge influence.

Please join us in asking the American Medical Association to stay true to the Hippocratic oath and continue to oppose assisted suicide.”

Take less than a minute to sign the petition HERE.

Legislative News

Iowa Right to Life Preferred Candidates

Iowa Right to Life always evaluates candidates for state and federal offices before elections and send out a list of the candidates who have shown themselves to be the most pro-life in legislative action.

Here the list of their preferred candidates:

President & Vice President - Donald Trump and Governor Mike Pence

U.S. Senate - Senator Charles Grassley

U.S. Representative District 1 - Congressman Rod Blum

U.S. Representative District 3 - Congressman David Young

U.S. Representative District 4 - Congressman Steve King

Vote NO on Judges

Iowa Right to Life also recommends voting NO to retaining Supreme Court Justices Appel, Cady, and Hecht. The reason they give is that “when given the chance to protect women and unborn children in 2015, the Iowa Supreme Court ignored the medical expertise of the Iowa Board of Medicine. These men enabled Planned Parenthood to continue to unleash dangerous webcam abortions across Iowa. Further, they willfully established precedent for other states to do the same.”

Scintillating September

Thanks so much for putting up with my long absence this summer! I think I will start doing updates every other month (instead of every month). That way it can still be helpful for notifying you of key pro-life events in the Des Moines area and I can find time to do it, since computer time is hard to come by with a nursing infant : ) Thanks for understanding!

I still hope that this can be a valuable resource for learning about all the local pro-life events, ways to help, and important pro-life legislative updates and news. Moving to every other month updates, I will try to track down events further in advance to make sure you will know about them in time.

Thanks for all you do! Keep loving life!

Urgent Action Alert on Chimera Research - Must Act Before September 6th!

According to Human Life Action, "The National Institutes of Health, has recently announced its intention to lift its moratorium on funding research that involves injecting human embryonic stem cells into animal embryos thus creating part-human and part-animal organisms known as chimeras.

This means that, for the first time, the Federal government will begin spending taxpayer dollars on the creation and manipulation of new beings whose very existence blurs the line between humans and non-human animals. Public comments in opposition to this unethical research are currently being accepted. However, the window to act is tight; comments close on September 6 at midnight."

Please go HERE to make a public comment protecting the dignity of human life. They have a prepared message that you can copy, then go to the NIH public comment link, and paste. Done - less than one minute! Thank you!

Election – November 8th

Please pray for the U.S. election that will happen on Tuesday, November 8th! With the Supreme Court hanging in the balance, as well as the lives of many unborn babies, the effects of this election will be huge.

Charges Dropped Against David Daleiden

All charges against David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt were dropped. These were the two people who directly exposed Planned Parenthood’s sale of body parts through video footage. Pro-Life Pope Francis

“The victims of this [throwaway] culture are precisely the weakest and most fragile human beings — the unborn, the poorest, the sick and elderly, the seriously handicapped, etc. — who are in danger of being ‘thrown away,’ expelled from a system that must be efficient at all costs."

- Pope Francis, in a 2013 address to a delegation from the Dignitatis Humanae Institute

God bless you and your work! Thanks for all you do!

Always,
