Delightful December

Advent is here, and Christmas is coming! If you are looking for a way to prepare your heart for meeting Jesus at Christmas, I would challenge you to do some pro-life service this month or to remember local pro-life organizations in your year-end giving.

You could do things like meeting the needs of crisis pregnancy clinics (many have wish lists you can look up online) or encouraging a single mom or adoptive family with a card and a giftcard so they can do something special. You could also volunteer for a few hours at a pro-life organization, pray for an end to abortion, fast for the upcoming religious freedom Supreme Court cases, or attend a pro-life fundraiser.

Whatever you do, thank you for loving life, and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

Support DCHS Pro-Life Week

At the end of October, the Dowling Catholic High School Students for Life group hosted an educational, pro-life week for all of the students called Life is Beautiful week. Throughout the week they did things like have a day of silent solidarity for human life, did a pro-life rosary, hosted a showing of the Horton Hears a Who movie, had a Mass for Life, and did a thought-provoking Cemetery of the Innocents with crosses representing unborn babies whose lives were lost.

DCHS Students for Life would like to make this week an annual tradition at DCHS. Please consider writing the Dowling administration - Dr. Deegan, Mr. Meedering, and/or Mrs. Arnold a short, positive email showing your support for Life is Beautiful Week and thanking them for facilitating it.  Here is their contact info:

Dr. Deegan, President of DCHS: jdeegan@dowlingcatholic.org

Mr. Meendering, Principal of DCHS: mmeendering@dowlingcatholic.org

Mrs. Arnold, Assistant Principal: earnold@dowlingcatholic.org

If the administration knows this educational week has the support of local Catholic parents and DCHS alumni, they will be much more likely to allow it become an annual tradition.  Please feel free to ask friends and DCHS alumni to send a quick note of support/encouragement/approval to the DCHS administration as well.

Noble November

Thank you to everyone who helped make Respect Life month a success! We had a great showing for Life Chain again, and my husband and I were able to go to the Iowans for LIFE banquet and there was quite a crowd! There are so many easy and fun ways to support life! This month try to find one way to love life with your time, talent, and treasure.

Also special about this month is that November is National Adoption Month. There are several great adoption agencies in Des Moines which help parents to grow their family through domestic and international adoption, or through fostercare, which may sometimes lead to adoption. I have a cousin adopted from South Korea who is amazing, and adoption is near and dear to my heart. If you feel God calling you, learn more and take that step.

Legislative Update

- Texas and Ohio have joined the states which are defunding Planned Parenthood

- According to LifeSite News, “The House of Representatives will vote on Friday [October 23rd] on a bill that will use the reconciliation process to approve legislation to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

After the House approved a previous defunding measure, Senate Democrats defeated the bill.” The House will now try a different legal technique to defund Planned Parenthood.

Pro-Life Pope Francis

According to the Priests for Life September-October newsletter:

“The encyclical of Pope Francis entitled ‘Laudato Si,’ issued in June of 2015, contains many themes pertaining to the pro-life message. Note, in particular, the following paragraphs:

117. … When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities – to offer just a few examples – it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected.

120. Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion. How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or inconvenient they may be, if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomfortable and creates difficulties? If personal and social sensitivity towards the acceptance of the new life is lost, then other forms of acceptance that are valuable for society also wither away.

Thanks for all you to do! Keep loving life!

God bless,

Legislative Recap

In September, the U.S. House passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and voted to Defund Planned Parenthood while Congress investigates the organization.

The Senate voted 54-42 in support of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act this week, but it wasn’t enough to get the 60 votes needed to advance.

Although the pro-life legislation did not advance, please thank our Iowa Senators, who both voted pro-life. Send them a quick, prepared message HERE through the Susan B. Anthony List.

Pro-Life Pope Francis

During his visit to United States, Pope Francis addressed the U.S. Congress. Here are a few of his pro-life comments:

“The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development,” he said. “I am convinced that this way is the best, since every life is sacred, every human person is endowed with an inalienable dignity.”

The Pope also told Congress “to protect, by means of the law, the image and likeness fashioned by God on every human face.”

Pope Francis also made an unscheduled stop to visit the Little Sisters of the Poor. He showed his support for them in their religious liberty battle.

Thanks for all you do to support life!

God bless,

Diocesan Respect Life Meeting – September 1st

The next Diocesan Respect Life Meeting will be Tuesday, September 1st at 6 pm at St. Pius X Catholic Church (3663 66th St, Urbandale, IA 50322). Come to learn more about the pro-life initiatives in Des Moines and how you can be a part of them.

Iowans for LIFE Open House – September 10th

After over 40 years, Iowans for LIFE is moving to a new location. You are welcome to come see their new location during their Open House on Thursday, September 10th from 5 – 8 pm. Life is Precious Conference – September 12th

The annual Life is Precious Conference will be on Saturday, September 12th, from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm at Christ the King Parish, Des Moines. Lunch is included. The topic this year will be End of Life Issues.

Dr. Janine Idziak, from the Dubuque Diocese, will be the guest speaker. She will speak about “how moral principles from the Catholic tradition can assist and guide you in making difficult end-of-life decisions which can affect infants, children, teens and adults of all ages. It will include interactive discussion of using/forgoing life-sustaining treatments, medically assisted nutrition and hydration, and palliative care and pain management."

"You will learn how to execute advance directives (living will, durable power of attorney for health care) and IPOST (Iowa Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment) in accord with Catholic principles. Why physician assisted suicide should not be legalized will be discussed.  Participants will be provided with many materials to take home with them for future reference and use.”

National Day of Remembrance – September 12th

According to Priests for Life, on September 12th several pro-life organizations will sponsor the National Day of Remembrance. “On this day, simultaneous memorial services are held across our country at the gravesites of aborted children. There are dozens of such gravesites, some of them holding as many as 16,000 bodies. This common act of prayer witnesses to our society that we are truly living amidst a holocaust, and that the abortion debate is not simply about beliefs but about bloodshed, not simply about viewpoints but about victims. To find services near you, visit AbortionMemorials.com. ”

On their website, it looks like there aren’t any organized prayer services in Iowa. I recommend attending the Life is Precious event at Christ the King Parish in Des Moines (which is also on September 12th) and visiting their special Memorial Garden for lost unborn babies. This would be a good place to visit with your family and pray for victims of abortion on September 12th or any time.

40 Days for Life – September 23rd through November 1st

The Fall 40 Days for Life campaign will go from September 23rd through November 1st. Now is good time to start planning when and at which location your pro-life group will be prayerful witnessing.

New Details on Planned Parenthood Situation

This past couple months a lot has come to light with Planned Parenthood as videos continue to expose illegal activity. Here is some new information from the past month.
  • Iowa had a very well attended rally earlier this month at the State Capitol Building to support defunding Planned Parenthood. Governor Branstad, Senator Joni Ernst, and others were there to show their support. My family and I were at the rally, and we heard that over 1,000 people were there.
  • Five states have now defunded Planned Parenthood, and 13 states have started official investigations on the issue. Utah, Arkansas, Alabama, Kansas, and Louisiana have defunded Planned Parenthood. New Hampshire has also significantly cut funding.
  • Some of these states are facing attacks in response. After Kansas defunded Planned Parenthood, President Obama penalized them for it by cutting their funding by the same amount. See article about it HERE. In Louisiana, Planned Parenthood has sued the state after Governor Bobby Jindal defunded Planned Parenthood. See article about the Louisiana situation HERE
  • On August 22nd, national protests of Planned Parenthood took place in 352 cities. Many protests had hundreds and some had thousands of protestors. The number of pro-lifers using Twitter to promote the protests caused the topic to be trending on Twitter.
  • The Senate defeated the bill that would have defunded Planned Parenthood. Although a majority of Senators supported the bill (53 to 46), they did not reach the 60 votes needed. Grassroots needs to keep up the pressure, because the bill can be brought up at a later time.
Live Action states, “According to publicly available federal campaign donation records, every single Senator who voted not to defund Planned Parenthood, except one, has been awarded money from the abortion giant. Senator Angus King is the one exception, the only Senator who has not accepted Planned Parenthood cash.”

See how your Senator voted, and send them an e-mail thanking them or expressing your disappointment. Iowa Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley both voted to defund Planned Parenthood – please call or e-mail them to thank them.
