Iowa Catholic Conference Update
Proposed Rule Would Eliminate ‘Webcam’ Abortions
A public hearing on the proposal is set to take place Aug. 28 and a vote by the board is expected later this fall. We support the Board of Medicine in approving the new chemical abortion rule and requiring an appropriate standard of care for women’s health. We encourage you to write a letter to your local newspaper in support of the board taking action.
Interestingly, by 56 to 27 percent, a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll finds that Americans would support a ban on abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy rather than 24 weeks. In Iowa, abortion is legal throughout pregnancy. Our state law doesn’t match up with what Iowans support.

Final 'HHS Mandate' Rule Released
The federal Health and Human Services Department on June 28 released the final rule on the “HHS Mandate.” The final ruling does not appear to have changed significantly, so we must continue to defend religious liberty.
ICC encourages you to contact your legislators in support of legislation that would address the problem: H.R. 940 and S. 1204, the Health Care Conscience Rights Act. Go to www.capwiz.com/catholicbishops for an action alert.

USCCB Action Alert - Protect Conscience Rights and Religious Liberty
Meet with Members during the August Recess!
Please act today to protect conscience rights and religious liberty! Members of Congress should be urged to co-sponsor the Health Care Conscience Rights Act (H.R. 940, S. 1204), and to work for its approval in the next must-pass bill.
· Meet with members of Congress during the summer recess at their local office or at public events asking them to support conscience rights protection.
· Send an e-mail to your Representative through the USCCB's Action Center.
· Call your Representative and Senators. Contact the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, or call your Representative's and Senators' local offices. Full contact and schedule information can be found on Members' web sites at: www.house.gov and at www.senate.gov.
"Please co-sponsor the Health Care Conscience Rights Act (H.R. 940, S. 1204), and work for its approval in upcoming 'must-pass' legislation. Government must not force Americans to violate their religious and moral beliefs on respect for life when they provide health care or purchase health coverage."
Planned Parenthood Under Federal Investigation
On August 6, a spokesperson for the Government Accountability Office (GAO), an independent non-partisan investigative arm of Congress, confirmed that it will begin a nationwide investigation into how Planned Parenthood and other big abortion allies spend taxpayer dollars.
Just two weeks ago, a Texas Planned Parenthood affiliate agreed to a $4.3 million dollar settlement after investigators found it had engaged in waste, abuse and potential fraud in billing the Texas Medicaid program out of millions of taxpayer dollars, providing even more evidence supporting the urgent need for a federal investigation. Responsible Members of Congress have heeded the urgings of Americans United for Life to examine the dubious financial practices of Planned Parenthood.
US Bishops’ Officials Author Booklet for Blessing of Unborn Children
I have been thinking a lot about pregnant mamas and their babies lately since four of my friends gave birth in August. So I thought I would leave the link to this blessing booklet up for just one more month. I do believe that blessings are beautiful and powerful.
The new booklet, “The Gift of Joy,” has a beautiful blessing for unborn children, and it can be used in parishes. Let your parish priest know about it!
Information about the blessing is available online HERE.
Father Saves Son with Down Syndrome – Inspirational Article
I think everyone heard about the situation where the priest saved the unborn baby who had been diagnosed with down syndrome from abortion, but it came out later that the father of this priest had died while saving one of his other sons who had down syndrome.
This story has had a powerful effect on me and I feel like I must share it. The more I learn about parenthood, it is so much about showing true love by making sacrifices. I can only hope that I am practicing those little sacrifices daily so I will be ready to handle the big opportunities to sacrifice for the sake of my children when they come.

Thank you for all you do! Keep up the great work!
