It finally feels like summer is here! And with summer comes a slowing down of pro-life work before we build back up for Respect Life month in October. So enjoy your summer break with your family (which is a very pro-life thing to do), but still consider taking part in the events coming up.

Pro-Life Workshop in Rome – June 15th-16th
For any of you who happen to be in Rome on these days or know of someone who will, they are having a conference in English and a variety of activities to promote the sanctity of life. Oh, how I wish I could go, but it was fabulous just to see another example of our Church loving life so much and proclaiming the sanctity of it! For those of us who can’t attend, I recommend that we all read Evangelium Vitae for inspiration!

Fortnight for Freedom - June 21st
The 2nd annual Fortnight for Freedom takes place this year from June 21 - July 4, Independence Day. Please pray and fast for the cause of religious liberty.
Here is a helpful way to get religious freedom updates from the USCCB:
Also, consider having your parish participate in NCHLA’s postcard campaign for conscience rights! A perfect time to distribute and send these cards would be during the Fortnight for Freedom.
Find out more about the Fortnight for Freedom HERE. And we should be hearing about more events for the Fortnight soon.
Iowans for Life Banquet – July 27th
Join us for the Iowans for Life Banquet on Saturday, July 27, at 6:00 pm at Holiday Inn Airport, 6111 Fleur Drive, Des Moines. The dinner will be $25/person.
The guest speaker will be Bobby Schindler (brother of Terri Schiavo). Bobby Schindler is the Co-Executive Director of the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network which works to protect the lives of the medically vulnerable and disabled from the threat of euthanasia.
Following the tragic death of his sister, Terri, via imposed dehydration and starvation, Bobby gave us his teaching job at Tampa Catholic High School and became a full-time pro-life and disability rights advocate. Today Bobby assists families in need of legal action to prevent their loved ones from health care rationing and food and water removal. Bobby and the Schindler family continue to advocate for persons with disabilities and he works tirelessly to put an end to the growing pro-death mentality that is plaguing our nation.
Please RSVP by July 22 to 515-255-4113 or email@example.com.

Protect Conscience Rights - NCHLA
On August 1st the HHS mandate will begin to be enforced against nonprofit religious schools, charities and health care providers. In the days to come, Congress must decide whether to address this problem through must-pass legislation before that deadline. Please act today to protect conscience rights and religious liberty!

Even if you have already contacted your Representative in support of H.R. 940, it is important that Members again hear of the need to pass this legislation.

The appropriate candidate must be an experienced fundraiser, be well connected to the Greater Des Moines Christian community and have a passion for the sanctity of life from conception to natural death.

Volunteer Pro-Life Ultrasonographers Needed at InnerVisions
InnerVisions Healthcare is seeking volunteer ultrasonographers to help serve their growing number of clients. A free ultrasound is the heart of their ministry and has helped to empower more than 100 women to choose life for their babies.
They currently employ a full-time RN who is trained in limited sonography for the purpose of this ministry. However, they need someone to fill in when she is not there. If you are a retired sonographer will you prayerfully consider helping them? Ministry training will be provided. God bless and thank you.
For more information or if you have questions, contact Jenny Condon at 515-440-2273 or jenny@innervisionshealthcare.

Among Gosnell’s 237 convictions were three counts of first-degree murder of infants born alive during attempted late-term abortions, one count of infanticide, and the involuntary manslaughter of a patient who died from complications of anesthesia administered by an unlicensed nurse at his abortion clinic. He was also found guilty of conspiracy, performing abortions beyond the legal limit in Pennsylvania, and 208 violations of the state’s informed consent law. On May 14, Gosnell was sentenced to life in prison.
Since Gosnell’s conviction, a late-term abortionist in Houston, Texas, is being investigated for Gosnell-like clinic practices. Three clinic workers have given evidence against Douglas Karpen and an investigation has been ordered.
Closer to home, late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart’s registered nurse, Lindsey Creekmore, has had charges filed against her nursing license by Attorney General Jon Bruning who is accusing her of improperly drugging patients. Her license may be revoked.
Live Action, a group that investigates conditions in abortion clinics, believes that Gosnell is not the exception, but that there are many similar late-term abortion clinics. See the results of their investigations HERE.
Abortion hurts women and babies! For more information on the Catholic Church’s pastoral response to those who have been involved in abortion is available at www.HopeAfterAbortion.com. More information on nationwide efforts of prayer and fasting are available at www.usccb.org/fast.
Please pray for the truth to come to light and for the souls of all involved.
New Documentary on Gendercide
American filmmakers made a documentary dealing with the issue of sex-selective abortion and infanticide. The amount of this going on in the world is staggering. Estimates suggest that more girls are killed in India and China each year than are born each year in the US.
This film is apparently not overtly pro-life, but has a pro-woman, pro-life message by showing the horrible effects of sex-selective abortions. It is one that I know would be difficult to watch, but that it is one I probably should see. Check out the trailer HERE.
If you have seen it, let me know what you think.
FYI Iowa Right to Life Book Sale
Iowa Right to Life will hold their last book sale this fall. After that, the sale will be suspended until further notice. This will allow resources to be spent in more effective ministry. Decisions are being made about the future of the book sale, whether it will be permanently discontinued or taken over by another Pro-Life entity.
Due to the tens of thousands of donations they already have for the upcoming fall sale, they will no longer be accepting donations. Thank you to everyone to volunteered, promoted, or shopped at the book sale to support life these past 8 years!
ISU Students for Life students participate in Pro-Life T-shirt Day!
Good Ideas from Local Groups
From reading meeting minutes from local pro-life groups I’ve come across some great ideas that if you aren’t doing them yet, may provide some inspiration for future activities:
- Have your parish make a garden or monument in honor of all unborn babies lost to abortion, miscarriage, etc. Have a prayer service or special Mass said there.
- Get the parish school involved. Do a balloon rosary for life with the students, host a pro-life contest, do a spiritual adoption program, or ask if the school will do a jeans day to support your parish pro-life group.
- Participate in and promote the national Pro-Life T-shirt day and the Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity.
- Hand out pro-life bumper stickers after Masses.
- Sell inexpensive roses or carnations on Mother’s Day at Masses. Make Mother’s Day special. Include pregnant women in the celebration.
- Make a parish pro-life webpage or Facebook page. Get ideas from Holy Trinity's website or St. Theresa’s website. Those are the only two for local parishes I have seen. Every little bit helps to get the message out there.
I hope that you have a great start to summer! Keep up your great work for life!
