Remembering the Gift of Life at Christmas

I’m listening to Christmas music as I get this post ready to send out. It seems appropriate to be thinking about baby Jesus and the beautiful gift of His life to us at Christmas as I write about the wonderful pro-life events that by education and service try to share the message that all life is precious! And it’s also appropriate to be thinking about Mary, with her unexpected pregnancy, and how, with love and support, beautiful things and people can come from crazy situations.

There is so much that we can take from the Christmas story and apply it to our daily lives! One of those things is that we need to show our love in action, like Jesus did by coming down to be with us. I hope that you and your family are able to put love into action this Advent by participating in and spreading the word about these pro-life events in the Des Moines area. Thank you! Have a wonderful Christmas!

Sign Petition to Bring the Parental Notification and Intervention Act to a Vote

Pro-Life Alliance’s Parental Notification and Intervention Act would make it illegal to perform an abortion on a minor anywhere in the country (instead of on a state by state basis) unless the physician has given four days notice to both parents or the legal guardian.

Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) introduced the bill recently, but we need to generate a surge of support and cosponsors if we are to ultimately get a vote.

So please click HERE to quickly and easily sign the petition to your Congressman and Senators urging their action.

Enjoy Life During This Holiday Season!

With less than a week until Thanksgiving I’m getting excited and frantically finishing up responsibilities so I will be able to enjoy a little carefree time with my family. I hope that you are able to do the same, thankful for our many, many blessings, especially the gift of life.

Now we will start off with some pro-life Advent ideas, and then continue with the usual upcoming pro-life events!

Another thing to think about while Christmas shopping is to buy yourself or others a fashionable pro-life t-shirt that will be practical and start people thinking in a positive way.

My favorite pro-life t-shirts I found were by Rock for Life. The designs are ones that young people will probably enjoy, like “I love babies” (with 'love' drawn as a heart), “human rights for all,”  “let them live,” and “adoption saves lives.” See those options in t-shirts, sweatshirts, and maternity shirts HERE. And if you have a different style than mine, just search online for pro-life t-shirts and you will find many websites.

Multitasking is a beautiful thing, so get a present that will keep on giving  :)

Iowa Judge Says Webcam Abortions Back On

Iowans for Life: A judge ruled this morning that Planned Parenthood of the Heartland will be allowed to continue abortions via webcam in Iowa.

Polk County District Judge Karen Romano ordered a temporary stay on the decision by the Iowa Board of Medicine. The Board had banned the use of Planned Parenthood’s telemed abortion system, due to a physician not being present for the abortion procedure.

Pro-life supporters objected to telemed abortion because after the procedure the mother was left alone to deliver her dead child at home, and also contend with any complications on her own. In her decision Judge Romano indicated disregard for the risks to the mother’s health in a webcam abortion.

The issue of telemed abortion will be argued further in court.  Planned Parenthood has requested that Romano permanently overturn the Iowa Board of Medicine’s decision. Keep praying!

Four More Iowa Clinics to Close!

Iowa Right to Life shared that Planned Parenthood of the Heartland is closing four of their Iowa clinics in the next month.

“Ankeny, Fort Dodge, Mount Pleasant and Washington, Iowa, will see the abortion giant leave their town,” stated Jenifer Bowen, Executive Director of Iowa Right to Life.  “This means that in the last year and a half we have seen TEN clinics close for good.  We know that not only are the lives of the unborn safer when they leave, but so are the lives of the women seeking their services.”

“We could not be experiencing this unprecedented activity were in not for the faithful supporters of LIFE in these cities.  For example, Ankeny, once a webcam abortion location, has seen a steady decrease of business in recent years.  This has been one of the most active 40 Days for Life prayer vigil sites in Iowa.”

40 Days for Life Recap

40 Days for Life is a ministry that has amazing results as people pray and peacefully witness for life. During the Fall session 5 more abortion workers quit their jobs, 9 abortion centers that were sites of 40 Days for Life campaigns have closed, and 709 babies that we know of were saved from abortion!

A total of 8,245 lives have been saved during the past six years of the 40 Days for Life campaign. This makes such a difference! Find a way to volunteer, organize, and give!

Other important news for 40 Days for Life:

A generous donor has offered to match up to $102,000 of donations, however much they are given before Tuesday, November 26th. Right now they still have 1/3 of that to go. Please consider making a one-time tax-deductible gift HERE before November 26th.

 Easy Fundraising Ideas

Thanks to St. Anthony, St. Francis, St. Boniface, and All Saints churches who are sponsoring a Baby Bottle Fundraiser for InnerVisions HealthCare.

Consider involving your entire church by sponsoring a Baby Bottle Fundraiser on a given Sunday!  The clinic purchases the bottles and you distribute them to families in your church who will take them home, fill them with their pocket change or desired donation and return them to the church (or clinic).  We would be happy to be there that weekend to help promote the event and talk with your congregation about this life-saving ministry.  Promotional posters are available and if you want us to present a 2 minute message at the church services we are happy to do that too.

Contact, Laura Holms at 515-440-2273 or laura@innervisionshealthcare.org. A 10-15 day lead time needed to order bottles.

BUCKS FOR BABIES is another way to support InnerVisions! To get a free long-sleeve “Empower Women – Save Babies” t-shirt all you have to do is pledge $10 or more per month.  For more information, call Alicia 515-440-2273 or Alicia@innervisionshealthcare.org

Pope Francis Homily

Pope Francis warned in a recent homily about the dangers of secularism. He also mentions that today still “many, many people make human sacrifices and there are laws that protect them.” I’m not 100% sure what the Holy Father was implying, but my thoughts immediately went to legal abortion all over the world. Please pray for our Pope and that many people’s hearts would be open and touched by his words!

Full homily notes and YouTube video about it HERE.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Thank you for all you do!

God bless,

P.S. This is a pro-life issue too. Many of you know about Mary’s Meals, an organization that feeds over 800,000 children each day. The founder of Mary’s Meals, Magnus MacFarlane, has visited Des Moines numerous times and so many Catholics in Des Moines know of and support his work.

Please watch Child31, a movie about the work of Mary’s Meals, with your family. It’s 30 minutes and now available on YouTube HERE. This is a vital part of who we are as pro-lifers. Thank you for watching and sharing with family and friends!

Webcam abortion rule approved by Iowa Board of Medicine,
But keep praying!

The Iowa Board of Medicine approved a rule which would in effect prohibit “webcam” abortions. Yay! However, Planned Parenthood will try to get the vote against webcam abortions overthrown. They will not let this lessening of their revenue go easily. Please pray that the decision will not be overturned.

Cupcakes for Life – Best Idea Ever!

I love love love this!  What a fun, creative, and effective way to share the pro-life message! The Iowa State University Students for Life group does this each year. Watch this video to learn about the national movement of Cupcakes for Life HERE. Unfortunately I didn’t get this information in time for the actual day (October 9th), but I think this is something that should be done year round.

From Cupcakes for Life:

Cupcakes are such sweet and fun things to have at events, especially for birthdays! With this in mind, we want to help others realize not every child has the chance to have a birthday because of abortion, and that we care about them. We thought these children’s lives should be remembered, so we picked October 9th as a national day to recognize them and raise awareness about the issue of abortion and the impact it is having. By using cupcakes we are able to reach out to the general public in a warm, non-confrontational way and use it as a way to raise awareness, start conversation, and potentially educate individuals about issues that would ordinarily be suppressed to silence.

The Affordable Care Act, along with its embedded abortion coverage, is going into effect. 50 leaders from national pro-life groups across America issued a joint statement of defiance, declaring that they will not comply with Obamacare, which causes men and women of faith to violate their consciences by forcing them to purchase health insurance that pays for abortions.

You are invited to sign on to the "Pledge for the Preservation of Life and Liberty" and send a strong message to Washington that we will not tolerate the dismantling of our religious freedoms. Sign the pledge HERE

Today, Students for Life in America released a helpful new flyer explaining how the complex Obamacare system funds abortions. That helpful flyer can be downloaded HERE.

Pope Francis NOT Diluting the Importance of Being Pro-Life!

Here is a note from Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life which was very reassuring. It’s a little long, but I hope that it helps you as it did me:

As the Director of Priests for Life, known worldwide as a ministry within the Catholic Church that urges more preaching, teaching, and action against abortion, I was asked by many alarmed and confused people these past few days about the reported comments of the Pope that the Church should not be "obsessed" with this issue, and that there should be "balance" and "context.”

Is the pope saying we should talk less about abortion? Is he saying that the emphasis the Church has placed on this issue has been a mistaken emphasis?

When I first received these inquiries via emails and text messages, I was actually in the presence of Pope Francis, in the dining room of his residence. I had spoken just hours earlier, at the invitation of the Vatican, about the Church's defense of the unborn child, and about the clear and strong position of the Church, expressed in many documents, that the right to life is our first right and the foundation and condition for all the others.

So the news came to me with more than a little irony, and I immediately began to tell worried pro-life warriors that they had no reason to think that the Pope no longer wanted the Church to focus on abortion.

Pope Francis preaches on pro-life in a very integral way. He gives strong and clear messages that derive from the very substance of the Faith and a very broad vision of the demands that Faith places upon us. The conclusions and applications for the pro-life movement are undeniable, even if he does not use the specific words “pro-life movement” and “unborn.”

In his recent interview, he made it clear that the Church should put opposition to abortion "in context." This is neither new nor unwelcome. The Pope wants to see the renunciation of abortion put in the context of mercy toward the mother, and this is consistent with the pro-life movement's emphasis on "loving them both." In fact, in my personal conversations with the Pope, he particularly urged me to go forward with the work of Rachel's Vineyard, the largest ministry in the world for healing after abortion. He called it an "excellent work."

The Pope wants the teaching against abortion not to stand alone, as if it were a negotiable moral prohibition, but rather to stand in the context of our teaching about who God is. He made this clear in his June 16 homily at the worldwide "Day of the Gospel of Life" when he declared,

"The Scriptures everywhere tell us that God is the Living one, the one who bestows life and points the way to the fullness of life…The commandments are not a litany of prohibitions -- you must not do this, you must not do that, you must not do the other; on the contrary, they are a great "Yes!": a yes to God, to Love, to life."

"All too often, as we know from experience, people do not choose life, they do not accept the "Gospel of Life" but let themselves be led by ideologies and ways of thinking that block life, that do not respect life, because they are dictated by selfishness, self-interest, profit, power, and pleasure, and not by love…As a result, the Living God is replaced by fleeting human idols which offer the intoxication of a flash of freedom, but in the end bring new forms of slavery and death."

This approach radically strengthens the Church's opposition to abortion, because the Pope is saying not simply that it breaks the Fifth Commandment ("You shall not kill"), but that more fundamentally it breaks the First Commandment ("You shall not have other gods besides me") and that to disrespect life is to abandon God himself.

Nobody should worry or think that the Pope is in any way diluting the Church's strong and unchangeable stance against abortion, or contradicting all that has already been said and written, in documents like The Gospel of Life, about the urgent priority that this issue deserves. Some 50 million children are killed by abortion around the world each year. If we want to know how much we should focus on it, we only have to use human reason and ask what our response would be if 50 million adults throughout the world were killed each year by terrorism.

Long live the pro-life movement, and long live the Pope!

Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director of Priests for Life

Pope Francis’s Recent Pro-Life Comments

Last month the Holy Father, Pope Francis, addressed the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations and Catholic Gynecologists during a conference in Rome. Here is what he said:

“Each one of us is invited to recognize in the fragile human being the face of the Lord, who, in his human flesh, experienced the indifference and loneliness to which we often condemn the poorest, either in the developing nations, or in the developed societies. Each child who is unborn, but is unjustly condemned to be aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who, even before he was born, and then as soon as he was born, experienced the rejection of the world. And also each old person—I spoke of the child, let us also speak of the elderly, another point!—each old person, even if infirm or at the end of his days, bears the face of Christ. They cannot be discarded, as the “culture of waste” proposes! They cannot be discarded!

Do not ever neglect to pray to the Lord and the Virgin Mary for having the strength to do your job well and bear witness with courage—with courage! Today it takes courage—the courageous witness of the Gospel of life!”

I hope that this has been helpful for you and that it encourages you! Please share this with your family and friends. There is so much good happening – only so few people know about it.

Thank you for what you do! Keep being a light in the darkness!

God bless,
Rachel  : )
