Sweet Summer

Ok, so I’m finally getting to the summer edition of the pro-life blog.  Thank you to all of you who prayed for my young cousin’s soul after this recent death.  I also would appreciate your prayers because my baby boy should be coming soon – the due date is August 10th.  It’s my first time being pregnant in the summer, and I’m hoping baby decides to come early!

Although I haven’t had a chance to get out monthly updates the past two months, I hope that you have had a chance to take part in all of the recent, fabulous pro-life events.  This includes the InnerVisions Banquet, the Fortnight for Freedom time of prayer and fasting, the Diocesan Independence Celebration and Religious Freedom Rally, and so much more!  My family and I were able to attend several of the events and heard good things about the others and how many people were there.

You have been staying active this summer and you are making a difference!  See below for more opportunities in the near future for you or your parish pro-life group to participate in.  Keep up the great work!

Catholics Stand Up For Religious Freedom

On Monday, May 21st, forty-three Catholic organizations filed twelve lawsuits in Federal courts in an attempt to resist the Federal government's intrusion into their various ministries.  The forty-three include the Archdioceses of New York and Washington D.C., as well as prominent Catholic publisher Our Sunday Visitor, various Catholic Charities and social services, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Catholic University of America, and the University of Notre Dame.

This now raises the number to two dozen lawsuits filed by various religious institutions to protect themselves by appealing to the First Amendment and the Federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act.  EWTN, the world's largest religious media corporation, Legatus, the world's largest organization of Catholic CEO's and business leaders, Catholic colleges like Belmont Abbey, Ave Maria University and others have already filed their lawsuits.

Also, in an impressive display of unity, every bishop in America has registered his resistance to the HHS mandate. An unprecedented attack has spawned an unprecedented response. The United States Bishops are unified, and we need to be too.

Update on the Affordable Care Act (Also Known as “Obamacare”)

Supreme Court Upholds the Affordable Care Act

The Supreme Court recently issued a 5-4 decision essentially upholding the Obamacare law that pro-life groups regard as the biggest expansion of abortion and abortion funding since Roe v. Wade.  The law also drew strong opposition from the pro-life community not only over abortion but because the legislation also promotes rationing of medical care that could lead to involuntarily denying lifesaving treatment.

The Supreme Court has incorrectly ruled that Obamacare is constitutional, pro-life groups are saying in response to the decision.  They are pointing out that the need is greater now than ever to defeat pro-abortion President Barack Obama and elect a pro-life Senate that will join the House in repealing the legislation.

House of Representatives Votes to Repeal the Affordable Care Act

On July 11th, the House of Representatives voted on the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.  The Repeal ObamaCare vote in the House of Representatives passed by a vote of 244 -185.  Our Iowa representative, Leonard Boswell, voted no to repeal the act.  Feel free to e-mail him and respectfully express disappointment.

Quick Review on the Anti-Life Policies Contained in Obamacare:

·  Obamacare creates heavy federal subsidies, using your tax dollars, to help pay for insurance plans that cover elective abortion.

·  Millions of Americans will be enrolled – many unknowingly – in health care plans that include elective abortion coverage. These plans will charge enrollees, regardless of age and gender, a minimum of $1 per month – an“abortion surcharge” that will go into an abortion slush fund. Under a rule recently issued by Health and Human Services (HHS), the existence of the “abortion surcharge” only needs to be disclosed once – in the fine print – during the enrollment process. This surcharge is included without itemization in the monthly premium and is never disclosed again.

·  The “preventive care” mandate in Obamacare is already being used to force employers – regardless of moral or religious objections – to pay for insurance plans for their employees that include coverage for abortion-inducing drugs and sterilization.

Iowa Catholic Conference

USCCB Response to the Supreme Court Ruling on the Affordable Care Act

Because of the ruling, we will need to continue our efforts to reverse the Health and Human Services mandate on insurance coverage of medical services that violate our moral teachings.  Even if the "individual mandate" to purchase health care insurance had been struck, that most likely wouldn't have solved our religious liberty issue.

The Court did rule that if a state chooses not to participate in the expansion of Medicaid (health insurance for the poor) the federal government couldn’t take away all Medicaid funds from the state.

In response, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a statement noting that the USCCB has not previously joined in efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and does “not do so today.”  The bishops noted their longstanding advocacy of comprehensive health care reform to “ensure access to life-affirming health care for all, especially the poorest and most vulnerable.”

The bishops ask for ongoing efforts to fix what they see as the flaws in the law, including:

- The ACA allows the use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions and for plans that cover such abortions, contradicting longstanding federal policy.

- The Act fails to include essential conscience protection, both within and beyond the abortion context. This has been illustrated by HHS’s “preventive services” mandate, which forces religious and other employers to cover sterilization and contraception, including abortifacient drugs.

Lastly,

As part of our nationwide efforts to preserve religious freedom, Catholics and others of good will can use their cell phones to text FREEDOM or LIBERTAD (for Spanish response) to 377377.  They will receive an instant response requesting their email address and zip code.  From then on participants will be contacted in various ways about religious freedom - to pray, learn, and act, all in solidarity with the Bishops of the United States.

Iowa Right to Life Updates & Events

- Kudos!  A former Planned Parenthood of the Heartland Clinic Manager filed a lawsuit against the Midwest abortion chain.  "In effect, the lawsuit explains, Planned Parenthood both falsely billed Medicaid and took money from low-income women by getting them to pay for services Medicaid was intended to cover in full."

- Yay!  Planned Parenthood of the Heartland announced the closure of two more Iowa centers--the Newton clinic and the Family Practice Center in Des Moines. These centers will be closed effective July 19, 2012. These closures follow right after Planned Parenthood of the Heartland closed the doors in March on their abortion centers in Storm Lake and Knoxville, Iowa.

According to their email released today, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland will be consolidating the Newton center into their Ankeny office. The Family Practice Center will be moved into their surgical abortion center in Des Moines.

"Their release stated that "this consolidation will help serve patients" and would be "affordable and convenient" to their clients. It does not make any sense to say that they will better serve their clients by telling those in Newton that they will have to drive 35 miles, at a minimum, to enter the Ankeny abortion center," stated Jenifer Bowen, Executive Director of Iowa Right to Life. Keep praying!

Post Abortion Bible Study Facilitator Training

Saturday, October 13, 10am - 2pm in Des Moines

We are pleased to offer this training session for a third time! This training is held for women and men who are interested in learning how to lead a post abortion Bible study.   The Bible study SaveOne is designed for all denominations.  This study was selected as it is for both post abortive men and women.  SaveOne is a very good program that provides additional on-going assistance throughout the year as the Bible study leader begins each new session.

Priests for Life Update on Fr. Frank Pavone Situation

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Clergy has upheld Fr. Frank’s position that he was never suspended from priestly ministry, and that he remains a priest in good standing all over the world.

Gallup Poll Reports "Pro-Choice" Americans at Record-Low 41%
Americans Now Tilt "Pro-Life" by Nine-Point Margin, 50% to 41%

The 41% of Americans who currently identify themselves as "pro-choice" is down from 47% last July and is one percentage point below the previous record low in Gallup trends, recorded in May 2009.  Fifty percent now call themselves "pro-life," one point shy of the record high, also from May 2009.
