Life-Giving Spring

Tulips are popping up all over my neighborhood, trees are starting to flower, and my unborn baby boy is kicking excitedly. Spring always reminds me of new life, and it seems so consistent with the full slate of local pro-life activities that we have coming up. So save the date for these April pro-life events!

40 Days for Life

40 Days for Life continues until April 1st! There have already been 440 documented saves of babies across the country, employees at abortion facilities have chosen to quit, and two Planned Parenthood facilities have closed in Iowa (Storm Lake and Knoxville)! Lots of good things are happening – keep up the great work! For more specific information on our area, go to Iowa’s 40 Days for Life Campaign webpage:

Pro-Life Movie in Theaters

Thank you for supporting this pro-life movie! I heard that it shocked the box offices by coming in #8 for its opening weekend, even though a few big movies came out and October Baby was only in select theaters! Keep sending friends and family to check it out at the Jordan Creek Century Theater. Together we can support positive, pro-life media. See the trailer at

When you go to the movie, 10% of the profits to the Every Life is Beautiful Fund, which will distribute funds to frontline organizations helping women facing crisis pregnancies, life-affirming adoption agencies, and those caring for orphans.

Elizabeth Ministry Talk on Grieving: April 9

On Monday, April 9 at 7:00 pm Ann Valdez will be speaking on the grieving process in the St. Augustin Parish Hall. The event is sponsored by Joel Schmidt and the St. Augustin Elizabeth Ministry. Elizabeth Ministry is a program where a woman who has already been through a difficult or painful experience supports a woman who is currently going through the same thing (for example, miscarriage). Please spread the word about this talk! For more information, contact Pat at
Pro-Life Political Advocacy Training: April 14

The Quiners of St. Pius are bringing Catholic Advocate to Des Moines. Catholic Advocate is a pro-life advocacy group that trains Catholics on how to inform fellow Catholics on critical Life and Marriage issues. Unfortunately, too many Catholics make political decisions based on bad information. We want to change that.

Date: Saturday, April 14th
Time: 1:30 to 3:30 PM
Place: The Franklin Community Center, 5110 Franklin Avenue (next to the Franklin Library)

Please mark your calendar. They hope that you will come and use this session as a constructive way to inform Catholics on how to positively promote Church teachings in the political sphere. Bring friends and family – they would love to have a big crowd. Any questions? Call Tom & Karen Quiner at 689-9266. And spread the word!

Iowans for Life Annual Dinner Save the Date: July 21

Pro-Life Legislation

Please keep praying, educating friends and family, and e-mailing your legislators. As I write this, the Supreme Court is deciding whether or not the mandate and parts of the new healthcare law are constitutional. If the justices decide that they are ok with the law, our options for a quick resolution will continue to become more limited.

The Bishops have asked Catholics to mark March 30 as a Day of Prayer for Religious Liberty! Pray and fast with your families and keep working!

Good News: Recently, on March 23, over 140 cities held rallies protesting the HHS mandate. Over 54,000 people participated. Even more encouraging was that the rallies were covered by the media in many cases.

HHS Mandate

Keep up to date by bookmarking and visiting the Des Moines Diocese webpage on religious freedom:

Want to act? Use the SBA List Action Center to send a message to President Obama and Secretary Sebelius. Tell them that their war on the unborn, women, and religious liberty is not going unnoticed and that there will be consequences for their actions this November:

Iowa Catholic Conference

For state legislation that affects pro-life issues, visit the Iowa Catholic Conference website at and keep up with their action alerts. There is one current issue:

House 8213

Representative Annette Sweeney has sponsored an amendment, H-8213, to the spending bill, House File 2435. This amendment, the "Whole Woman Health Act" will re-direct federal and state family planning dollars to private and public hospitals, health clinics and other organizations that do not perform abortions. Rep. Sweeney's amendment
also stipulates that no taxpayer money is to be used to pay for abortions. Please contact your House Representative at 515.281.3221. Ask them to support H-8213.

Thanks! I hope that you’re enjoying the Spring! Keep up the good work!

God bless,
Rachel :)
