Respect Life Month!

On October 16, my brave mom and I ran/walked the Des Moines Half Marathon – a first for both of us! It was such a beautiful day, and the race itself was such a rush! Even though it was difficult to walk for a couple days after, I can’t wait until I can do another one!

In the days leading up to the race, I heard on the radio about a group of pro-lifers in Kansas City that were training for a series of races in Kansas City – a 5K, half marathon, and marathon. They run to raise funds for pro-life organizations in the KC area, and to raise awareness by running in cool t-shirts that have “Remember the Unborn” printed on the back. They also have friends, family, and fellow pro-lifers cheering them along the way. To learn more about their efforts, go to: http://run.lifegroup413.org/.

It just made me think… running for the pro-life cause is an awesome way of multitasking that I had never thought of. So what are you passionate about? Whatever your passion is, try to think of a way that you could use it to support or raise awareness of the dignity of human life from conception to natural death. People often learn best when they are taught in a new way – a new environment, a hands-on experiment, an adventure. If we can surprise people with our passion for life and bring the message to place where it is unexpected, maybe more people will take the message to heart!
On another important note: Check out the resource section in this blog, and make time to watch the 180 movie. Yes, it’s thirty minutes long, but it’s taking the internet by storm and you will NOT regret this use of your time. Do you want to learn how someone can be talked into becoming pro-life in under five minutes? Watch this video!

Pro-Life Workshop on End of Life Issues

Dying with Grace: Incorporating Catholic Faith Into an Advance Directive
Saturday, October 22, 9 am - 12 noon
Sacred Heart Church, Parish Center, West Des Moines

The St. Joseph Educational Center of Iowa and Sacred Heart Catholic Church are pleased to bring you two fabulous speakers coming soon in October: Mr. Paul Malley, president of Aging with Dignity, and Mr. Jim Towey, author of Five Wishes. Together, these two men will offer a practical workshop on creating an advance directive that serves your needs and the needs of your loved ones.

Mr. Malley was our keynote speaker in February 2011 for Dying with Grace: Reflecting on the Catholic Approach to the End of Life. If you attended the February session, this workshop will take you to the next level of practical application, walking you step-by-step through the Five Wishes document. If you did not attend the February session, the workshop format will make it easy for you to understand and incorporate the ideas presented.

Mr. Towey, friend and former legal counsel to the late Mother Teresa (shown together in the picture below), is founder of Aging with Dignity and author of Five Wishes, the nation's most popular advance directive. Mr. Towey will share "Lessons from Mother Teresa," his personal experience of how his work with Mother Teresa inspired him to found a nonprofit organization devoted to safeguarding the God-given human dignity of those who are most vulnerable.

Online registration at SJEC Iowa is appreciated to help with planning and a free will offering will be taken at the workshop. For more information, contact SJEC Iowa at 515-222-1092 or visit our website. Please feel free to share this opportunity with family and friends.

We hope to see you at Dying with Grace in October!

One of the big events coming up on November 13, is a totally FREE event at St. Theresa’s Parish. This will be a family-friendly event, with lots of free refreshments. Thought of the Day

(Another thought-provoking Facebook status going around)

A worried woman went to her gynecologist and said, “Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your help! My baby is not even one year old, and I'm pregnant again. I don't want kids so close together.” So the doctor said, “Okay, and what do you want me to do?” She said, “I want you to end my pregnancy, and I'm counting on your help with this.” The doctor thought for a little, and after some silence he said to the lady, “I think I have a better solution for your problem. It's less dangerous for you too.” She smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request.

Then he continued, “You see, in order for you not to have to take care of two babies at the same time, let's kill the one in your arms. This way, you could rest some before the other one is born. If we're going to kill one of them, it doesn't matter which one it is. There would be no risk for your body if you chose the one in your arms.” The lady was horrified and said, “No Doctor! How terrible! It's a crime to kill a child!” “I agree,” the doctor replied, “but you seemed to be okay with it, so I thought maybe that was the best solution.”

The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point. He convinced the mother that there is no difference in killing a child that's already been born and one that's still in the womb. We all must learn that "Love says I sacrifice myself for the good of the other person. Abortion says I sacrifice the other person for the good of myself.”

Parish Activities

Life Chain – Life Chain was a success. I heard that over 410 people participated in the Life Chain this year. That’s great! I know that at St. Theresa’s Church we had over 110 people from various pro-life groups. Thank you for coming! What was most interesting to me was that there was so much support! There might have been one or two negative responses in the hour and a half, but there were countless honks with thumbs up. So many Americans are pro-life, we just need to reach out to them and give them courage to act. Keep up the great work!

40 Days for Life is also going well! Keep up the great work! We are halfway through the 40 Days of prayer, fasting, and witness in front of Des Moines area Planned Parenthoods. Even after your church’s days are completed, please keep praying for the success of the campaign and that hearts would be changed!

IRTL Booksale – Thank you for supporting this great cause! Enjoy your new books, and the knowledge that your money is going to crisis pregnancy centers and supporting women and babies in difficult situations!

All Saints

- Diapers for Donuts event: Not as many diapers as they hoped for, but they raised $287 to go to Informed Medical Clinic. They possibly will change next year’s event to just be a free will offering. Great job guys!

- 40 Days for Life: They are praying each Friday.

- They have put bulletin articles about end of life issues in the bulletins this month.

Upcoming Events:

- Cake for a Cause: They are working on setting up Dessert and Prolife Conversation events where a speaker will give a presentation while people listen and have cake, a dessert wine, and possible nuts.

- Diocesan Prolife Retreat: Tentatively coming January 21st at Christ the King parish. Help out financially or volunteering if possible.

For more information, contact Geneveve Loraditch at grloraditch@gmail.com.

Christ the King

- Spiritual Adoption: Soon they will begin their spiritual adoption program. To help parishioners visualize their adopted baby, they are purchasing adoption prayer cards and small baby models.

- 40 Days for Life: They will participate, and try to really involve the parish in the Lent campaign.

- Adoration Chapel near Army Post Planned Parenthood: There are plans among pro-lifers to open an adoration chapel in Southridge Mall in the near future. Once this chapel is open, they are planning on setting up a Eucharistic procession to Planned Parenthood and would like to make this procession a monthly event. More information will be coming regarding the chapel. Remember that around the country Planned Parenthood abortion facilities have closed again and again when they are surrounded by prayer power. Please pray for this project!

- Literature Rack and Parish Library: They will periodically rotate the brochures in the literature rack, and will be purchasing two copies of the DVD “Blood Money” for the parish library.

- Donut Sunday: Their committee will provide donuts for Mass soon, and pass out bookmarks and pro-life rings and bracelets for donations.

- Baby Bottle Fundraiser: They will distribute baby bottles to parishioners on the weekends of Oct 22-23 and 29-30. Participants will have until Christmas to return bottles.

- Altar and Rosary Bazaar: They will have a table at the bazaar on November 12th. They will sell craft items and Respect Life items.

- Ideas to involve more youth: A movie night for the youth group and their parents, doing a pro-life living rosary, or bringing in a representative from Dowling Students for Life group to talk to the teens were suggested.

Great Ideas from the ISU Students for Life

In addition to Life Chain on campus and 40 Days for Life, the Iowa State Students for Life have many amazing projects they are pulling off. Consider doing one of their projects with your group!

- They watched the movie “Blood Money” as a group, and can show the DVD to others.

- They are creating pro-life t-shirts for the group

- Pro-Life Cupcake Day! Such a cool idea! “Cupcakes for Life is a movement designed to spark conversations specifically about the children who never get to have a birthday. In case you didn’t know, for every three children that get a birthday, one is never allowed. So we decided to do something to remember all these birthday-less children: celebrate their birthdays every year.” (http://www.cupcakesforlife.com/about-us/what-is-cupcakes-for-life/). The ISU Students for Life will pass out free cupcakes on Iowa State’s campus and and start discussions with students going to and from class.

- Flags will be placed around campus at intervals, showing lives lost to abortion.

- Tuesday, Oct. 18: They will be silent for the day and wear tape that says "LIFE" in a visible place for others to see. Hand out informational papers to curious people to explain the event. http://silentday.org/

- They are making baby baskets and handing them out to expecting Iowa State students.

- They are doing a field trip to Informed Choices Medical Clinic.

New ‘180’ Pro-Life Movie

Watch ‘180’ at http://www.180movie.com – An intense, but positive documentary! Watch as a Jewish man draws parallels between the Holocaust and the holocaust of the unborn today. Watch as he uses logic to persuade young people to see the inconsistencies in their anti-life positions. Warning: This video contains some strong content in regard to the Holocaust (watch first before showing it to any children or young people). This is a powerful video that could be a GREAT resource for your pro-life group to show to young people or adults to get them thinking logically about life issues.

News & Politics

I’ll try to make this into a very summarized part (I had literally 20 pages of pro-life legislation e-mails to work through). There is so much going on! Try to keep up with what you can, and keep sending e-mails to representatives and senators. The Protect Life Act has passed the House… now we need to redouble our efforts to try to get it through the more difficult U.S. Senate. Also, please sign the petition below to support the investigation of Planned Parenthood’s use of tax payer money.

Iowa Catholic Network

Update: Iowa Catholic Network now has a “Mobile Capwiz” site that is accessible from your smartphone. Just go to www.capwiz.com/iowanasccd or click on “Action Center” on our web site. There are no state alerts there right now because the legislature is not in session, but you will be able to receive action alert messages more conveniently from your phone.

HHS Health Mandate Update

Thanks for the messages you sent to the federal Health and Human Services Department regarding the new regulation on preventive services. Many thousands were sent through the U.S. bishops’ website. The regulation will require contraceptive (including some drugs that can cause abortions) and sterilization coverage with no co-pays in almost all private health plans nationwide. We don’t consider being fertile to be a disease, nor should organizations have to violate their conscience by providing this coverage. We’ll keep you posted on whether HHS takes any action to change the regulation.

Last week there was encouraging news as 28 U.S. Senators added their voices to the debate, asking that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius address their concerns. The Senators wrote that they are concerned “with the lack of due consideration given by [Sebelius] and [her] Department to the adverse impact that IOM’s recommendations would have on our core constitutional value of religious liberty,” and asked that the coverage guidelines respect “human life, individual liberties, and personal conscience.” For the full list of Senators who voiced their concerns and to read the letter, click here.

USCCB New Faithful Citizenship Document

Earlier today the U.S. bishops released a brand-new introductory note to their document on faithful citizenship. The bishops are today re-affirming the document, “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” as the “continuing teaching of our Bishops’ Conference and our guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and duties as participants in our democracy.”

The new website for the document is www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship.

I believe the formation of our individual consciences is critical to our involvement in the political arena. Please take a look at the document and forward this email to anyone who may be interested. Thanks for your attention.

Updates on National Planned Parenthood Investigation

The hard work of pro-lifers is finally paying off! This year pro-lifers have sent hundreds of thousands of messages to their elected officials demanding the defunding of Planned Parenthood, and Americans United for Life’s report, The Case for Investigating Planned Parenthood, has prompted Congress to officially investigate their pattern of waste, fraud, and systemic abuse. Congressman Cliff Stearns (R-FL), who chairs the Committee on Energy and Commerce’s Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, has launched an investigation of Planned Parenthood. The question is: Can Planned Parenthood justify $1 million a day?

We congratulate Congressman Cliff Stearns for spearheading this unprecedented initiative for life. Congressman Stearns himself said: "Although Planned Parenthood is barred from using federal funds to perform abortions, these funds are fungible and allow the group to use funds from other sources ostensibly for abortions. Since the Planned Parenthood Foundation of America receives about $1 million a day in taxpayer funds, I sent a letter to the group's president requesting documents and information as we look at the organization's use of federal dollars and its compliance with various laws."

This is a critical step in holding accountable an organization that has been exposed as a billion dollar business centered on abortion and an unapologetic partner of those who exploit young girls.

Pray especially because now Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards and her pro-abortion allies are trying to get the investigation of Planned Parenthood called off. Led by extreme pro-abortion Congress members including Reps. Henry Waxman (D-California) and Diana DeGette (D-Colorado), they are trying to get Representative Cliff Stearns to drop the investigation.

Pro-abortion U.S. Senators sent a letter to Rep. Cliff Stearns last week to “express our strong disapproval of your Subcommittee’s investigation into Planned Parenthood and their affiliates.” They called Rep. Stearns’ investigation into Planned Parenthood “invasive and baseless.”

The letter was sent by Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), and Patty Murray (D-WA) -- Senators Mark Begich (D-AK), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Jon Tester (D-MT) are cosignatories of the letter.

To sign a petition to support investigating and defunding Planned Parenthood, and to give Rep. Stearns evidence that the American people support this, click here.

It is clear that Planned Parenthood is desperately calling-in favors and redoubling its public relations offensive to shore up its demoralized political base. This is a desperate time for the pro-abortion lobby. We can’t let this opportunity pass us by!

Let’s not for a moment forget that Planned Parenthood is not “the trusted non-profit health care provider” they want everyone to believe... This is an organization that in 2009 performed 332,278 abortions and referred for 977 adoptions - a saddening one adoption referral for every 340 abortions!

This is a HUGE thing, and pro-choice lobbyists are mobilizing quickly. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (who we were just e-mailing about the HHS mandate last month) told pro-abortion supporters at a Chicago fundraising lunch for NARAL Pro-Choice America recently, “We are in a war,” when she discussed the Obama Administration’s efforts to continue Planned Parenthood funding.

If you can help support national pro-life groups like Americans United for Life (http://aul.org/) and the Susan B. Anthony List (www.sba-list.org), please do! While we have the momentum, we need to push forward, because Planned Parenthood has powerful friends in politics and media. So sign the petition and pray pray pray!

Legislation Would Defund UN Program Linked to Forced Abortions in China

A bill that would prevent U.S. tax dollars from funding an organization that supports coercing women to abort their children passed out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee last week. Pro-life Congresswoman Renee Ellmers introduced H.R. 2059 to prohibit funding to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), a move that would save $400 million in taxpayer dollars over ten years. UNFPA is both a major proponent of abortion worldwide, and an unwavering supporter of China’s coercive one-child policy. Since President Obama reinstated funding to the UNFPA in 2009, Congress has allocated $145 million in taxpayer funds to this organization.

As you know, the One-Child policy has led to forced abortions, forced sterilizations and other human rights violations in China. In fact, a recent congressional hearing led by Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) exposed the evidence of the untold numbers of women that have been brutally forced to have abortions performed on them, ending the lives of precious unborn children they desperately want to keep.

Rep. Ellmers’ bill was the winning YOUCUT entry for the first week of the competition in May, an online event sponsored by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, in which taxpayers like us were invited to say what Congressional budget items they would eliminate (which means we are not alone in thinking that this should be one of the easier decisions of where to cut funding).

The majority of Americans agree: our hard-earned taxpayer dollars should not go to fund abortions overseas and contribute to human rights abuses.

Please send a prepared message to your Representative right now and tell them to pledge to support H.R. 2059 to defund the UN Population Fund of American tax dollars. To e-mail your Representative, click here.

Thank you for standing with us to defend human rights.

The Passage of the Protect Life Act in the House of Representatives
Up Next: The Senate Vote

Members of the U.S. House voted 251 to 172 (including 15 supportive Democrats) to support the Protect Life Act - a bill that addresses anti-life and anti-conscience threats in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the health care law enacted in 2010. The measure is designed to deal with loopholes in the health care law that would allow some monies to subsidize abortions. Use the SBA List Action Center to thank your Representative or express disappointment based on how they voted.

The bill now heads to the Senate where passage is deemed less likely. Last week, White House advisors released a statement saying that they would recommend that the President veto the measure should the Senate pass the bill. This would mean that the President has gone back on his word from the beginning that the health care bill would not subsidize
abortions.

Action Alert: Pray pray pray, and be ready to e-mail your Senator when the Senate is preparing to vote.

Heartbeat Informed Consent Act

The National Catholic Register, reporting on the Heartbeat Informed Consent Act sponsored by Rep. Michelle Bachmann, noted Dr. Yoest’s reaction: “This bill provides concrete, positive and effective steps for Congress to protect women’s health.” To read the entire article, click here.

Tennessee Defunds Planned Parenthood

Recently the County Commission in Shelby County, Tennessee, voted 9 to 4 to redirect $397,000 in Title X family planning funds to Christ Community Health Services instead of renewing a longtime contract with Planned Parenthood.

That means that, thanks to the hard work of the pro-life people of the state, Tennessee has completely defunded Planned Parenthood. It also means that our Scoreboard is now up to $61 million tax dollars stripped from Planned Parenthood so far this year by nine states.

Between the good news in Tennessee, the recent passage of the Protect Life Act in the House of Representatives, and the congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood, momentum in the fight for Life is clearly on our side.

UN Considers Euthanasia and New Treaty on Aging

NEW YORK, September 29 (C-FAM) The Holy See condemned attempts to inject euthanasia into the right to health, and Latin American and Caribbean delegations called for a new UN treaty at two recent UN meetings on the rights of the elderly.

At the Human Rights Council in Geneva the Holy See representative said his delegation took “strong exception” to a report at the meeting which referred to “issues of patient autonomy in respect of deciding to end life.” He urged doctors and scientists to resist “practices that shorten the life of the aged and sick, practices that would turn out to be, in fact, forms of euthanasia.”

Delegates to UN meetings grappled with the fact that the world will have 2 billion elderly people by 2050, up from 600 million in 2002. According to UN projections, the percentage of elderly in almost every country is rising faster than ever before.

Action Alert: Pray for and remember the elderly. Soon we may have to focus more of our efforts on end of life issues.

Priests for Life

There has been some controversy between Fr. Frank Pavone and the Bishop of his diocese. We pray for both them, for Priests for Life and all of its pro-life organizations, and that any issues may be resolved so that the work can progress. In the mean time, Fr. Frank has appealed to the Holy See and pro-life work continues. While Fr. Frank awaits the time when he will be back on the road and on the air, audio and videos of recent homilies and talks are available online at http://www.priestsforlife.org/fr-frank-on-the-road/index.aspx?cid=6.

Dr. Alveda King, Director of African American Pro-Life Outreach has produced a video regarding the current situation with the Bishop. The video is the featured video on their new homepage and at www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJYnctqcAo0.

Iowa Right to Life

Governor Branstad's Proclamation for LIFE!

The Proclamation signing happened on Friday, October 7, at 11:15am. This signing was held in the Governor's Formal Office at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines.

Governor Terry Branstad has offered a Proclamation that in Iowa the first Sunday of each October will be "Respect for Life Sunday." The purpose of this proclamation is to educate all citizens of Iowa, young and old, that life is precious and should be respected.

This education will take place through the following statements:

Whereas: Life is to be respected in all stages of development beginning with fertilization and continuing to natural death.

Whereas: We shall show respect in our daily lives as we protect the unborn from the abuses of abortion. We will raise them in the traditional values that come with a traditional family

Whereas: Life will be respected in the latter years of life by having in place a continued support system which will offer them the dignity earned through years of service to family, church, community, friends and country.

Whereas: Life will be respected through the acceptance that Life is not ours to give nor is it ours to take. These are the functions of a higher being. That being is God.

Whereas: Respect for Life Sunday is a day of recognition that we were given the gift of choice not as a weapon against Life, but so that we can call upon our God and receive eternal life.

Hey everyone!

I hope you made it through all of the prolife legislation section. It's a blessing and a curse... There's a lot to keep track of, and a lot of messages to write (thank goodness for the prepared e-mails from AUL and SBA and Iowa Catholic Network!), but at least that means the issues are being talked about. And with Planned Parenthood being officially investigated, more people in the general population may see through their public relations front. Please pray hard, send your e-mails and petitions, and continue to also make a difference to individual moms and babies directly affected by abortion.

God bless you and your work!

Always,
Rachel : )
